Naples beaches are home to sea turtle nests every year. You can see them nest here, but remember they are protected! Part of living near the Gulf means being aware of how your everyday activities might affect the surrounding wildlife.
Nesting season runs from May through October, which overlaps with the time of year when people are spending the most evenings outside. As a result, we want to be especially careful about the outdoor lighting we have in our Naples homes. What might feel normal around the house will disrupt the natural cycle of sea turtles. Hatchlings follow the natural glow of the horizon, so even small pockets of light near homes or pools can draw them in the wrong direction.
Why Are There Beachfront Lighting Rules
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has set guidelines for all areas that have sea turtle nests. These ordinances focus on limiting what light is visible from the beach. For most homeowners, it's just shielding a few fixtures, lowering brightness, and avoiding bright white bulbs near the shoreline. However, one of the most important adjustments is switching to turtle-friendly lighting, which relies on amber or red LEDs that measure 560 nanometers or longer. The LED outdoor lighting OLP uses in our color-changing line can be adjusted easily with an app to create the warmer amber tones. These tones do not disrupt nesting turtles, and still give you enough light to move around the pool or deck at night.
Why Fixture Placement Matters in Naples Landscape Lighting
Beyond bulb color, fixture placement has a significant impact. With Naples landscape lighting, we want to give your home good curb appeal without beaming light onto the beach. Pathway lights and architectural lights can be layered together to make your outdoor hangout space usable.
Keeping fixtures low to the ground keeps light from projecting across the beach. Shielded pathway lights, carefully aimed uplighting, and subtle downlighting from covered areas allow homeowners to maintain a comfortable outdoor environment while respecting nesting habitats.
If you have a pool with a lanai or a dock, you may still want the safety that lighting provides. We can direct light downward and use specific wavelengths to protect nesting turtles on the beach, and still keep you safe when walking.
Living With Nesting Season
When working with a turtle-friendly outdoor lighting company, turtle nesting season doesn’t really change how you use your yard. It just makes you notice lighting a little more — especially anything bright that points toward the beach. For many homes, adding a lamp shield or adjusting the light color in one or two spots limits the issue without completely sacrificing pathway and yard lighting.
