Pool Lighting in Minneapolis
Connect Your Pool & Outdoor Spaces After Dark
A pool lighting plan should account for more than the water. We design coordinated illumination for pools, pool houses, patios, gardens, pathways, and nearby entertaining spaces based on the home and property. With more than 20 years of outdoor lighting experience, Outdoor Lighting Perspectives of Minneapolis creates custom designs that connect these areas after dark.
Pool lighting can include underwater illumination, perimeter lighting, and fixtures that highlight nearby features. A connected plan allows the pool, patio, pathways, and landscape to read as one outdoor environment rather than separate pools of light. We also design lighting for holiday displays and other outdoor areas.
Lighting around a pool house adds function when evening gatherings continue after sunset. Thoughtful placement can support poolside entertaining while creating an atmosphere suited to the homeowner’s preferences and plans for the space.

Lighting for Water, Walkways & Entertaining Areas
Underwater lighting illuminates the pool itself, while perimeter and poolside lighting connect it with walking areas, seating, and architectural features. Placement in pool walls, floors, and surrounding features influences the appearance of the water and the visibility of the pool edge. The right arrangement depends on the pool configuration and how the surrounding space is used.
We recommend LED outdoor lighting when homeowners add a pool, patio, deck, or hot tub. LED technology can improve how these areas function after dark while helping homeowners save money. Depending on the selected system, pool lighting may be available in white-light or color-changing options.
A coordinated poolside design may include:
- Underwater illumination: Light placed within the pool to reveal the water, pool shape, and interior features.
- Perimeter lighting: Fixtures positioned around the pool to define its edge and connect it visually with adjacent spaces.
- Path lighting: Illumination along routes near pools, hot tubs, fire pits, and other outdoor entertaining areas to increase nighttime usability.
- Pool house lighting: Light planned around entrances, gathering areas, and architectural details for evening pool parties.
Brightness and placement should work together. Too much light can overpower the setting, while disconnected fixtures can leave transitions between the pool, patio, and landscape visually uneven. We tailor each plan to the property and the homeowner’s needs.
Our Minneapolis Pool Lighting Process
Our process begins with a complimentary lighting design consultation with local design professionals. We discuss which areas need illumination, the desired nighttime atmosphere, and how the pool relates to the patio, pathways, landscaping, and other outdoor living spaces.
Property-Specific Plan
We develop a custom plan around the home, pool, pool house, and surrounding property. Each fixture serves a purpose based on how the homeowner expects to use the space after dark.
Clear Project Estimate
We provide a clear estimate that establishes the scope of the proposed pool lighting before installation begins. The homeowner can review the plan and make an informed decision.
Installation & Cleanup
We install the approved system with attention to the surrounding property. After completing the work, we remove installation debris from the poolside area.
Ongoing System Maintenance
We provide ongoing maintenance for our lighting systems, addressing fixture condition, illumination performance, and changes in how the outdoor space is arranged or used over time.
Electrical Considerations for Pool Lighting
Electrical requirements for pool lighting depend on fixture type, location, voltage, and nearby pool equipment. Underwater luminaires, which are fixtures intended to operate beneath the water, have different requirements from ordinary landscape fixtures.
National Electrical Code Article 680.23 addresses underwater pool luminaires. It calls for luminaires to be listed for the application, installed in a forming shell, and supplied by circuits with ground-fault circuit interrupter protection. A ground-fault circuit interrupter, commonly called GFCI protection, disconnects power when it detects certain electrical current imbalances.
Article 680.26 addresses equipotential bonding, which connects conductive components to reduce differences in electrical potential. Metallic parts within 5 feet of a pool can include underwater-lighting forming shells and mounting brackets. These parts generally require bonding, subject to exceptions for certain listed low-voltage systems.
Fixture clearance also matters. Under Article 680.22(B), luminaires located within 5 horizontal feet of the inside walls of a permanently installed pool require specified clearance above the maximum water level unless an applicable GFCI-protected exception is met. Requirements should be evaluated for the particular pool, fixture, placement, and applicable local rules rather than assumed from a general concept.
Keep Your Poolside Lighting Working with the Space
Outdoor spaces change after installation. Landscaping matures, seating moves, pool features are added, and entertaining needs evolve. A poolside lighting review can identify fixtures that need attention and areas where the existing illumination no longer matches how the property is used.
Our ongoing outdoor lighting maintenance addresses the condition and performance of systems we install. Homeowners considering new pool lighting can begin with a complimentary design consultation and a clear estimate based on the proposed scope.
