Make sure every step and grade change is illuminated for safe footing. Then you can stack uplighting and downlighting at different heights to build a sense of depth.
Hillside backyards are a gift in daylight and a bit of a curse after dark. The slope gives you a view, to be sure, but it also gives you drop-offs and terraced steps. And it’s never a great feeling to find a retaining wall with your shin in the dark. So the first job of lighting a sloped yard: telling you where you can and can’t put your feet.
Safety naturally comes first. So step one is to deliberately light every step, every retaining wall, and every grade change. Low path and step lights along terraced stairs and at the base of walls handle most of that quietly. It doesn’t have to turn your yard into a runway.
Once you do that, you can then use the elevation to your advantage for aesthetics. Uplighting and downlighting work even better on slopes than flat yards. Having light at different levels gives a yard a sense of depth and makes it feel like a natural amphitheater. Add some moonlighting from tall trees, and you get a soft, even wash of light that easily softens any hard edges across the grade.
As you do this, be mindful of glare. On flat ground, fixtures point into the grass. On a hill, that same beam can aim straight into the eyes of someone standing higher up. Glare guards and shrouds help.
Also be aware of drainage and erosion issues. Slopes shed water. So that means any fixtures and wire need secure, proper burial to stay in place. It helps to have an expert here.
